According to the Trademark Law of Russia, foreign applicants must register trademarks in Russia solely via patent attorneys registered in Russia. An application for trademark registration in Russia may be filed in a black/white or color representation. Registrable are word, figurative, combined, sound, smell, three-dimensional and other types of designations serving for goods individualisation, works performed and services rendered by legal or natural persons. One application may include any number of Nice classes.

What's even more important is that Russia uses the "first-to-file" policy. No evidence of use is required upon a trademark application filing. The rights to the mark will belong to the person who files the application first, even if a mark was used in Russia by another company or individual for a long time. There are certain russian companies which hunt for the actually used but not registered marks. They register the marks in their name and then claim the unlegitimate mark users of infringement demanding a compensation to be payed off.
